the curious case of benjamin button.

The tagline of the movie was "Life isn't measured in minutes, but in moments."

I didnt really get that from the movie, but it made sense after I came back from the theater and looked up the reviews and whatnot. I try not to read reviews of movies before I go into them because I dont want to watch a film with a preconceived idea of how it should be, what it should tell me, or what I should get from it. That way I can assess the theme and storyline myself and afterwards, compare my opinions with others and see what I might have missed, what I saw differently, etc..

One line that stood out was when Benjamin says:

Benjamin Button: I was thinking how nothing last, and what a shame that is.
Daisy: Some things last.

It was so simple, and I dont think the film went into much depth after that line. I think it was pretty subtle and yet clearly set the tone for the movie.

I am still looking for the monologue that Brad Pitt recited.. his daughter was reading postcards that he wrote for her. That was probably the most inspirational part of the movie. I was wondering what the movie would be about, besides love and death. It would have sucked if they hadnt included that excerpt (which could be from the short story, of which is still on my to do list).

I guess I should read the story before I write any further. I want to see how much Hollywood has stayed true to the plot (which is probably not alot).

All in all, it was a great movie. It was a bit slow in the beginning, but I was fully attentive when they were at sea and battling a submarine. Tilda Swinton's character was so interesting.. she had everything, money, power, a husband, and yet she found companionship in a still older Benjamin. I think Swinton has great presence.. The movie was super sad.. I was sniffling through the end. One of my girl friends called me a wuss, but I think shes just cold-hearted. :P

More about the movie later after I read the story, then.
